Wu Xiaogang, Ph.D. in Sociology, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Professor of Social Sciences Department of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Director of Applied Socioeconomic Research Center of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The main research fields are social stratification and mobility, labor market and economic sociology, education, social demography, statistics and quantitative research methods. He has published many papers in international famous professional magazines such as American Journal of Sociology, American Social Review and Social Forces. In 2006, he was awarded Sper3cer Postdoctoral Research Scholarship of National Institute of Education. In 2007, Studying China Society with Brilliant Data won the Asian/Asian American Young Scholar Award in American Sociology. At present, he is the editorial board member of several English academic journals and the editor-in-chief of SSCI Chinese Social Review.

The applied socio-economic research center (CASER) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was established in February 2009. The center advocates quantitative social science research, and is compatible with various research methods, and conducts empirical research on the major socio-economic problems faced by China and their impact on people's lives and well-being from a multidisciplinary perspective. The research projects of the center involve education, employment, inequality, poverty, immigration, health and so on. The Center hosted the "Follow-up Survey of Hong Kong Social Dynamics" and cooperated with China Renmin University to participate in the "Follow-up Survey of Education in China". The center emphasizes the scientific, independent and social significance of research, and expects to stimulate discussion through seminars and workshops and share research results with more people.
