The shepherd brought the calf back, hunted horses and brought birds back. What do you mean?
Shan Ye and autumn scenery, Wang Ji's representative works, are written, with some hesitation and depression in leisure. "The shepherd drives the calf back, and the horse hunts and brings the bird back" means that the shepherd drives the herd home and the hunter drives past me with his prey.

This sentence comes from Wang Ji's Wild Hope in the Tang Dynasty.

Original text:

Looking at the dusk in Gaodong, I want to rely on it.

Trees are all autumn colors, and mountains are only sparkling.

The shepherd brought the calf back, hunted horses and brought birds back.

Care for no acquaintances, Long song pregnant with Cai Wei.

Translation:

At night, I stood in Gaodong and looked at it from a distance. I hesitated and didn't know what to do. Layers of trees are stained with autumn colors, and the mountains are covered by the afterglow of the sunset. The shepherd drove the cattle home, and the hunter passed me with his prey. Everyone is relatively silent and doesn't know each other. I really want to live in seclusion in the mountains!

Extended data

In the early years of Zhenguan, the poet Wang Ji (the younger brother of Wang Tong, a famous Confucian, educator and thinker in Sui Dynasty, and the grandfather of Wang Bo, one of the "four outstanding men in the early Tang Dynasty") resigned and lived in seclusion in Gaodong. The poem Wild Hope was written by the poet when he lived in seclusion. This poem has a very special position in Tang poetry. If you don't know the writing time of this poem, it may be difficult to understand its beauty.

Compared with the well-known Li Bai and Du Fu, I feel slightly inferior. In fact, this problem is also an important reason why we often emphasize the writing background of literary works.

This poem has a very special status, one of the most important reasons is that it was written in the early Tang Dynasty, and most of the poems handed down from Song, Qi, Liang, Chen and Southern Dynasties are the glory of palace poems. No matter how some researchers point out, as an event of palace poetry, it is originally a political event, and literary criticism is only the beginning.

As far as the criticism of palace poems is concerned, it starts from the content and objectively denies the tendency of writing romantic poems in the Southern Dynasties.

But in the Southern Dynasties, the power of this criticism was still very weak. Until the early Tang Dynasty, the Mitchell school headed by Wei Zhi, as the official spokesmen of the new dynasty, showed the light of the new dynasty by denying the culture of the previous generation and thoroughly criticized the emotional expression in the old poetry.

The appearance of Wang Ji's Wild Hope can also be said to be the product of such a literary background, which shows a different kind of simplicity and the connection between the poet's soul and those hermits in history.
