Texts and quality education in primary schools in the Republic of China are shameful.
I didn't know the word "quality education" until I saw a 1934 Outline of Six-year Plan for Xin 'an Primary School in Huai 'an (hereinafter referred to as the Outline).

This is a rural primary school run according to Tao Xingzhi's educational thought. The core of Tao Xingzhi's educational thought is that life is education, society is school, and teaching and learning are integrated. Tao Xingzhi believes that education in the past was "read a dead book and read it to death!" There is no education except books, so there are many bookworms. Now we should start from the whole life, live the whole life and receive the whole education. "

The outline is divided into four parts: first, funds; Second, life; Third, the environment; Fourth, the slogan. What attracts me most is the second part, which is also the most distinctive "life" part. The following five "life goals" in this part-1,good health; 2. scientific mind; 3. Interest in art; 4. Production skills; 5. The spirit of freedom, equality and mutual assistance. In fact, it is these five indispensable goals that ultimately make a healthy person.

In order to ensure the practical implementation of these five goals, the outline has formulated a detailed "life method", which is divided into two parts: "personal life" and "group life" The former has 29 items, including:

First, do inner body exercise once a day.

Second, clean it once a day.

Third, keep a diary every day.

Fourth, eat five bowls of boiled water and one bowl of soybean milk every day.

Fifth, defecate once a day, and at regular intervals.

Read a local newspaper and a foreign newspaper every day.

I couldn't help laughing when I saw the fifth article, "defecate once a day", and I was moved inexplicably.

Having said what to do every day, here are the things to do every year:

Seven, vaccination once a year.

Eight, take a bath about eighty to one hundred times a year.

Nine, write twelve letters to children at home and abroad every year.

……

It can be seen that developers pay great attention to the balance between children's body and mind, and at the same time, in order to facilitate operation, every content has been "digitized".

After defining what each student should do every day and every year, the outline further extends to people's understanding of the environment. For example:

Fifteen, to know more than ten kinds of animals and plants that are most easily seen in the environment, and observe more than one growth process and its relationship with human beings.

Sixteen, know more than 12 stars and planets that are easy to see every night, and understand the causes of natural phenomena such as rain and dew and the relationship between life.

Seventeen, can enjoy famous songs and paintings and natural scenery.

……

When I saw article 16, I suddenly felt respect. In fact, up to now, I don't know any stars. Sometimes in the suburbs, standing under the starry sky and looking up at the starry sky at night, it is always necessary to rely on the guidance of others to distinguish which is the Big Dipper, which is Altair or Vega.

In addition, there are five quite specific requirements in the Outline:

Nineteen, can sing twelve new songs.

Twenty, you can get a musical instrument.

Twenty-three, will make more than ten kinds of science toys and plant mineral specimens.

At the age of 24, I can play the phonograph, movie player and radio.

Twenty-five, can take photos and develop photos.

……

The last three items in the outline are both practical and meaningful:

Twenty-seven, can use more than ten kinds of commonly used drugs.

Twenty-eight, understand the social life, choose a basic social life of workers, such as farmers, bricklayers, carpenters, blacksmiths and so on. And observe the records in detail, which is the basis of studying social science.

Learn to swim and punt.

In addition, in the part of "group life", there are some things worth remembering and learning from, such as "taking turns as chairman and taking notes every day", "cooking and carrying water in turn every day", "going on a long trip once a year", "keeping five pairs of chickens and two dogs", "catching mosquitoes and understanding why mosquitoes are the enemy of mankind" and "collecting social criticism opinions".

Seeing this, I can't help thinking: What will happen to a seven-or eight-year-old child after five or six years of quality education? It is not difficult to see that all these meticulous and even trivial contents are closely related to the five "life goals" at the beginning-namely, healthy body, scientific mind, artistic interest, production skills and the spirit of freedom, equality and mutual assistance. Its purpose is obviously to cultivate students' physical and mental health through concrete, practical and vivid educational practice, which is useful to society. Through this "outline", we can see the producer's good intentions: trying to construct the relationship between education and life, school and society, individual and the world, man and nature. And it is clearer and more practical than the "quality education" advocated in some places today.
