Xuchang university is a provincial full-time undergraduate college, which has been incorporated into the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" project of national applied undergraduate colleges. It is also the first batch of "pilot units for the transformation and development of local undergraduate colleges" and the first batch of "demonstration application technology-oriented undergraduate colleges" in Henan Province.

The predecessor of Xuchang University is Lilian Normal School, the fifth administrative region of Henan Province, which was founded in 1942. 1953 was renamed Xuchang Normal School of Henan Province with the approval of Henan Provincial Department of Education; 1In August, 958, the Henan Provincial Department of Education instructed Xuchang Teachers College to be upgraded to Xuchang Teachers College; In March 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Xuchang Teachers College was upgraded to Xuchang University.
