Yiyang City governs 3 counties (Anhua County, Taojiang County and Nanxian County), 1 city (Yuanjiang City) and 3 districts (Ziyang District, Heshan District and Datong Lake District). The total area of the city is 12320 square kilometers, and the total population is 385 1600 (permanent population in 2020).

Yiyang City is an important production base of grain, cotton and sesame oil in China, and is known as the "land of plenty". The output of ramie ranks first in China, and that of reed and jute ranks first in Hunan Province.

Yiyang is rich in water resources, rich in mineral water reserves in the central city and high in metasilicic acid, which is rare in China. Yiyang is rich in mineral resources and is known as "the hometown of small nonferrous metals". Among them, ceramsite shale reserves rank first in the province.

Yiyang City is located in the north-central Hunan, across the middle and lower reaches of Zishui River, at both ends of Yuanshui River and Lishui River, around the southwest of Dongting Lake, and at the eastern end of Xuefeng Mountain, and is in the inclined zone of transition from the hills in central Hunan to Dongting Lake Plain. Yiyang has a long and narrow terrain, high in the west and low in the east.
