Yokohama city university originated from Yokohama Business Law School founded by 1882. At first, the school was run by local businessmen.

1888 the school was renamed as yokohama commercial school, a five-year school (14- 19 years old), which enrolled boys exclusively.

19 17 yokohama commercial school was changed into a municipal school.

192 1 became the only seven-year business school in Japan (12- 19 years old). The Ministry of Education requires schools to shorten the academic system to two years, but in the regulations of Japanese business schools (192 1 year), seven-year business schools are not allowed.
