Hebei Polytechnic University, formerly known as Beiyang Western Mining Institute, was founded in 1895. Founded in 1958, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Tianjin University is registered in 1959. Hebei Polytechnic University was founded in 1958, and its school history can be traced back to Tianjin Beiyang Western School Mining Institute founded in 1895.

In the 21st year of Guangxu (1895 10.02), on August 14th, Emperor Guangxu granted an imperial edict and established Tianjin Beiyang Western Learning School. This is the first university in the history of modern education in China.
