Southwest University for Nationalities, referred to as "Southwest University for Nationalities" for short, is a comprehensive university for nationalities directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is one of the earliest universities for nationalities established in New China, a national model school for national unity and progress, a national training base for college graduates' employability, an excellent legal talent training base, a national college preparatory education base, a national college practical education innovation and entrepreneurship base, an off-campus practical education base for college students directly under the central government, a bilingual talent training base of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and a national graduate employment base.

The school, formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities, was founded in July 1950 and renamed Southwest University for Nationalities in April 2003. In 2005, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and Chengdu jointly established. 20 15 The State Ethnic Affairs Commission was jointly established with the Sichuan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. 20 16 Sichuan provincial people's government signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the school.
