Northwest University for Nationalities, located in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, is a full-time undergraduate college directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It was jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the China Academy of Sciences and the Gansu Provincial People's Government. It is the first national university established after the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC).

It is the backbone plan of ethnic minorities, the first batch of pilot universities for the reform of the national education and training plan for outstanding talents in agriculture and forestry, the construction unit of high-level universities in Gansu Province, the member unit of CDIO Engineering Education Alliance and the governing unit of China Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of UNESCO.
