Anhui Normal University (AHNU for short), located in Wuhu City, Anhui Province, was founded in 1928 and is the first comprehensive university in the history of higher education in Anhui Province.

The school is a university jointly founded by the Anhui Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC) (China). It was selected as the first batch of four universities supported by the "High-level University Construction Project with Local Characteristics" and the "High-level University Award Fund Project" of Anhui Higher Education Revitalization Plan.

The first batch of universities in China with the qualification of accepting overseas students in China at public expense, the first batch of master's degree awarding units in China, the China government scholarship receiving institutions for the first batch of overseas students in China, the first batch of social work professional training bases of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the national Chinese education base, and the Anhui Chinese International Promotion Center have the right of self-taught associate professors and the qualification of recommending graduate students without examination, and are also comprehensive provincial key universities with priority admission in Anhui Province.

Anhui Normal University is the earliest institution of higher learning in Anhui. The school is located in Wuhu, a state-level open city with the reputation of "Huizhou charm and city of thousands of lakes". It is close to the vast Yangtze River and adjacent to Lingxiu Zheshan Mountain. It is the epitome of the natural beauty in the south of the Yangtze River and the spiritual hero of Anhui humanities.

It is a university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Midwest" project. The school's predecessor was the provincial Anhui University 1928 founded in Anqing. 1946 was renamed as National Anhui University, and 1949 moved to Wuhu in February. Later, it went through several stages, such as Anhui Normal University, Hefei Normal University, Southern Anhui University (inscribed by Comrade Liu Shaoqi) and Anhui University of Workers and Peasants.

1972, approved by the State Council, was officially named Anhui Normal University (inscription by Comrade Guo Moruo). In 2005, Wuhu Normal University was merged into Anhui Normal University.

In the course of running a school for more than 90 years, Zhou, Yu Dafu, Su, Chen Wangdao, Zhu Xiang, Zhu Guangqian, Wang Hanggong, Yang Lianggong, Tao Yin, Zhang Weici, Ding, Xiang Nan, Xu Jie and many other well-known experts, scholars, and social sages have successively gathered on the banks of Linghu Lake and Jinghu Lake to write books, spread knowledge and enlighten education.
