Xiamen Island was the habitat of egrets in ancient times, so it was also called "Egret Island". Tongan County was established in the Western Jin Dynasty, and Xiamen City was established in the 27th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1394). 1935 Xiamen was established, 1980 Xiamen special economic zone was established with the approval of the State Council, and 1988 was approved as a city under separate state planning by the State Council. 1994, Xiamen was upgraded to a sub-provincial city.

Gulangyu Island has been officially approved as a national 5A-level tourist attraction since May 8, 2007. It was selected as "the first of the five most beautiful urban areas in China" by National Geographic magazine, and was known as "the garden on the sea". Many Chinese and foreign architectural styles have been preserved on the island, which has the reputation of "World Architecture Expo".
The residents of the island love music and have a high density of pianos, so they are known as Qindao. The main attractions are Sunlight Rock, Xinzhuang Garden, Beach and Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall. On July 8, 20 17, "Gulangyu Island: Historical International Community" was included in the World Heritage List, becoming the 52nd World Heritage Site in China.
