Li Shutong

( 1880- 1942)

Li Shutong is a famous musician and educator in the modern history of China. As an early enlightener of the New Culture Movement in China, he engaged in various artistic activities all his life and made great achievements in the fields of music, drama, painting, calligraphy, poetry and other arts and cultures. At the same time, it has also trained a large number of outstanding artistic talents.

Li Shutong 1880 was born in a family of Jinshi and salt merchants in Tianjin. He had a wide range of knowledge when he was a child. When I was a teenager, I was good at poetry, painting, writing and engraving. 190 1 came to Shanghai, studied at Nanyang public school, and was a student of educator Mr. Cai Yuanpei. During his study, Li Shutong still engaged in various artistic activities. His literary talent is outstanding. He won the first prize three times in the essay contest of "Lu Xuetang" and won people's praise. 1905- 19 10 studied western painting and music at ueno art institute in Tokyo, Japan, becoming the first progressive intellectual in modern China to study music and painting abroad, and the first person in China to study western music. In addition to studying composition theory, he also focused on the piano. From 65438 to 0906, Li Shutong edited and published Music Magazine, the earliest Japanese music periodical, and distributed it in China. The purpose of his publication is to arouse people's hearts with music and promote social progress and development. In Music magazine, he also published three songs, My Motherland, Running in the Suburb of Spring and Sui and Liu Land. 19 10 in March, Li Shutong returned to the motherland, taught in Tianjin and Shanghai successively, and worked as a music editor in the Pacific newspaper. 19 13 used to be a music and art teacher in Zhejiang No.1 Normal School and concurrently a music and art teacher in Nanjing Normal School. 19 18 became a monk in hupao temple, Hangzhou, with the legal name hongyi. 1942 died in Kaiyuan Temple, Quanzhou, Fujian.
