Inspired by his father, Tianhua studied in this new school since childhood, so he was exposed to many new western ideas. Tianhua has a strong interest in music since he was a child. He often attends temple fairs and religious music performances in his hometown. Through the contact with these music, he learned a lot about local folk music, especially the silk and bamboo in the south of the Yangtze River that spread in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. At this time, he had a preliminary view on erhu. After graduating from primary school, I entered Changzhou Middle School, joined the school's military band, learned the bugle and flute, and got a preliminary understanding of some concepts of western music, such as music theory and staff. 19 12 Liu Tianhua 17 was admitted to the band of Shanghai Ming Kai Drama Club, which is a new drama club. Later, Zhou Shaomei, a famous silk and bamboo artist in the south of the Yangtze River, was invited to guide him, and Liu Tianhua learned erhu and pipa from him. After that, he went to Nanjing to study pipa with Shen Zhaozhou, a famous scholar in Pudong, and then went to Henan to study guqin. At this point, Tianhua has more deeply felt the exquisite and elegant side of China traditional music. During this period, he further studied various traditional folk music. He often explores and studies folk music and Buddhist music with his friend Che Chen, who is familiar with music. Later, he organized a national music research institute in Jiangyin to study erhu, pipa, bamboo slips and gongs and drums with local national music.
1922, Liu Tianhua went to Beijing to teach in Peking University Music Research Association, and met musicians Xiao, Yang Zhongzi and Liu Tianhua. During this period, he studied violin with Russian professor Tonov and achieved good results. The study of violin gave him a good start to improve the huqin, and he further studied western composition methods, especially western and acoustics. During this period, he also made further research on China traditional opera. In addition, he organized an organization to study Kunqu Opera at home, studied and studied with students from Peking University and Women's Normal University, and learned Sanxian Opera from time to time, which was of great help to his future composition.
