Xiangtan University's continuing education is an important part of higher education and one of the important forms for the school to perform its social service function. Adult education in Xiangtan University began at the early stage of 1974, and the earliest adult education work was undertaken by the Training Section of the Academic Affairs Office.

1982 in March, the school set up a cadre training department, which is responsible for managing the adult education of the whole school. At the end of 1984, the cadre training department was renamed as the adult education department. 1993 established the institute of adult education, and changed its name to the institute of continuing education in February 2009.
