In 603, Emperor Wendi Renshou of Sui Dynasty was admitted to Jinshi in three years, and then went west to Chang 'an. When he met Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty, he made twelve strategies for Taiping, advocating "respecting the king, pushing the tyrant, sizing up the situation, and transporting the world in the palm of his hand." Wang Tong wrote the Song of the Eastern Expedition, expressing his feelings of lack of talents. Since then, although he was appointed as Shu Shu's assistant and Shu Wang's assistant, he soon resigned and returned to his hometown because he lost confidence in the imperial court, and only devoted his ambition of preaching kingly way to the cultural and educational undertakings of continuing the Six Classics and gathering disciples to give lectures.
