Xiao is considered to be one of the earliest people who wrote school songs in modern China. Rich and varied music works, including school songs, played an important role in promoting music education at that time. Xiao is the founder and pioneer of professional music education in China, and his music theory work "Ordinary Music" has had a far-reaching influence in the field of music education. 1927 Together with Cai Yuanpei, he founded the first independent higher professional music education institution in modern China-the National Conservatory of Music, which is today's Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
