During the ten-year turmoil, on a hill surrounded by mountains, there was a humble school with few teachers. One day, the captain called an educated youth who had been in line for seven years and sent him to school as a "king of the children" and a teacher. After learning the news, the educated youth were happy with their partner's commitment and very excited to see him off. From then on, "king of the children" became his nickname. The school appointed the king of children to teach the third grade, which surprised him. Only the headmaster at the primary school level encouraged him to carry the heavy burden. The king of children has a lot to worry about. School political learning materials are piling up, but students have no books in their hands, so they have to learn critical materials. Article study was criticized one after another, but the children didn't even know the new words in the primary school textbooks. The children's king was deeply moved, so he had to learn from reading and memory. After the holiday, king of the children returned to the team to visit everyone. Everyone had a good time, but he was depressed. When he left, Lydia, who wanted to teach music at school, sent him away specially. Months passed, and the children got along well with the students. Wang Fu, from a poor family, really wants to take this dictionary to Tong Wang. When arranging the composition, he bet his dictionary that he could write a composition describing tomorrow's labor today. In the evening, he and his father went into the mountains to cut bamboo and finished their composition in the middle of the night. The King of Children told him that "writing one thing is always afterwards". Wang Fu knew that he had lost it and couldn't get the dictionary. He is determined to copy all dictionaries. Educated youths stopped by the school to visit king of the children, coaxing them to let king of the children give them lessons. The king's children solemnly told the story of "Once upon a time there was a mountain". The story is passed from one classroom to another, and the students' voices of pain are endless. In the evening, Wang Fu is still copying the dictionary with The Oil Lamp King. He copied a large stack of jute paper. Leddy didn't understand, and asked king of the children to stimulate students' interest in learning with its own unique teaching methods, but this violated the teaching content. He finally returned to the team. Before leaving, he left the only dictionary to Wang Fu, and wrote on it: Wang Fu, don't copy anything from now on, don't copy dictionaries.

1988 this film won the director's special award, the best cinematography award and the best art award in the 8th China Golden Rooster Award. In the same year, it won the educational contribution award of the 4th1Cannes International Film Festival, and the exploration film award of the Belgian Film Exploration Award.
