What is the SAT?
SAT detailed explanation

SAT is divided into two parts:

(1) general test-reasoning test, including reading, writing and mathematics, called SAT or new SAT.

(2) Subject examinations, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and foreign languages (including Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Spanish), are collectively referred to as SAT2.

SAT mainly tests candidates' writing, reading and math abilities, with a score of 800 for each part and a total score of 2,400. SAT2 has a perfect score of 800 in each subject. Most famous American universities only require applicants studying in China to provide SAT scores, while some colleges and majors require applicants to provide SAT2 scores.

The SAT score is the only one that American universities can get, and it can compare the scores of students from different regions and schools, so it has a great influence on admission and scholarships. It is almost impossible for high school students in China to be admitted to the top 50 universities in the United States if they only have TOEFL scores. Most famous American universities require applicants studying in China to provide both SAT and TOEFL scores.

The SAT test is three hours and forty-five minutes, and the topic is multiple-choice questions and writing. It mainly tests the reading, mathematics and writing abilities of candidates, with a full score of 2400. SAT2 (subject test) lasts for one hour, mostly multiple-choice questions, which mainly examine the knowledge of a certain major of candidates. SAT2 is a single subject examination, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and foreign languages (including Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Spanish). And it is based on the requirements of various majors and schools.

SAT test type

SAT logical reasoning test is also called SAT I (pronounced SAT 1) to distinguish it from SAT II (pronounced SAT2). SAT2 is an examination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, American history, English literature, French, Spanish, Chinese and other subjects 17. Mathematics SAT2 is divided into two levels: C 1 and C2, and C2 is more difficult than C 1.

Up to now, many American universities think that there is no SAT test network in China, so applicants can not provide SAT2 test scores.

SAT score calculation method

To understand the calculation method of SAT score, we must first introduce two basic concepts: original score and relative score percentage.

The score of each question on the SAT is equal. No matter how difficult the topic is, the score of each SAT question is equal. Get one point for answering a SAT question correctly; Deduct 1/4 points for answering the wrong SAT question; No answer, no penalty.

Original grade: the number of correct questions multiplied by 1, minus the number of wrong questions multiplied by 1/4, equals the original grade.

Relative score percentage: Statistics of the original score and relative score percentage of candidates in the same exam.

SAT score: map the original score to a table of 200 to 800 in relative proportion. The content of each exam is different, so it is difficult to evaluate the scores of the two exams with the original scores. The percentage of relative scores obtained by this statistical method can tell the relative level of each student of college admissions staff. For example, reading: in a SAT test, the best original score of 1% is 67 points (67 questions); Another SAT test, the best original score of 1% was 66 (67 questions). Then according to the original score, 67 points is better than 66 points. This is obviously unreasonable. Therefore, according to a correspondence, it is practical to map the original score between 200 and 800.

New SAT

Since May 2005, the SAT has been divided into three parts: English, writing and mathematics. 800 points for each part, totaling 2400 points. Previously, the SAT consisted of only two parts, English and Mathematics, with 800 points for each part, totaling 1.600 points. Since the SAT now includes the writing part, the original "SAT2 Writing Test" was cancelled.

In addition to the writing part, some slightly more difficult algebra problems have been added to the math part. Of course, it will not increase or decrease. For example, change the boring antonym vocabulary to make it easier to read and fill in the blanks.

On the surface, SAT reform is more difficult, longer and more content. In fact, if we consider that because of the addition of the writing part, the university that originally required SAT2 writing will no longer require SAT2 writing. Many universities will require two SAT2 test scores. Moreover, in this way, Asians have to work hard on writing. Perhaps, in the long run, this reform is a good thing for Asians as a whole.

Since May, 2005, in order to enter American universities for undergraduate studies, students in the second and third years of middle school must take the new SAT.

SAT test difficulty

As an exam, from the difficulty point of view, the mathematics part of the SAT will not have much problem for China students in the United States. Because Chinese mainland's mathematics education focuses on technical problems, it often ignores basic theorems and definitions. If you are not fully prepared for SAT math, you will be caught off guard. After about three months of rigorous training, many China students should be able to get full marks.

Generally speaking, English reading and writing have become a threat to China students in the United States, especially high school students in Chinese mainland. Many English reading and writing questions involve a lot of pre-Europe, mainly the cultural connotation brought by pre-Britain. Foreign race can be said to be a discriminatory test. Of course, even a little knowledge of American culture, history and geography is difficult for high school students in China. Generally speaking, after one or two years of targeted systematic study, students in Chinese mainland can achieve very satisfactory results. When junior high school students or senior high school students from Chinese mainland first arrived in the United States, they knew nothing about American education and SAT. After a long period of extra-curricular tutoring, I achieved quite satisfactory results in the SAT.

The structure of SAT test

SAT is divided into three parts: reading, mathematics and writing; The score for each part is 200 to 800. There will be a 25-minute no-score section in each exam. The purpose of excluding grades is to design future test questions and so on. The non-hierarchical part can be any of these three parts.

It is not feasible to adopt a fully computerized voting system. If the votes are only recorded in the memory of the machine and there is no physical proof, it will be impossible to recount the votes. Vigilant election officials may ensure the integrity and security of voting, but long before election day, accidental or malicious mistakes may be introduced into the software. If a voter chooses "X" but the machine records "Y", there is no way to resume the expected voting. If computers are used in voting, there should also be a paper ballot that allows voters to verify their choices. This kind of voting allows the voters' wishes to be confirmed at any time in the future. Technological progress is beneficial and should be integrated into the voting process to improve the accessibility and convenience of voting, but we should not completely reject paper votes.
