Let's make sure they stay that way. Fortunately, schools, parents and communities are looking for practical ways to provide children with the safe and disciplined conditions they need and should find in schools, such as promoting smaller schools, respectful communities, fair and strictly enforced discipline codes, teacher training to deal with violence, school uniforms and after-school programs to keep children productive and off the streets. We must keep violence away from our school, and we must bring discipline and study back to school.
