Shanghai University of Political Science and Law is two universities. The school has two campuses, one is 7989 Songqing Road outside Shanghai, and the other is Sanyuan Road 175. Shanghai University of Political Science and Law is a public full-time undergraduate college with independent legal personality. Shanghai University of Political Science and Law was founded in 1984, formerly known as Shanghai School of Political Science and Law Management, then merged with the Law Department of Shanghai University College of Literature, and became independent from Shanghai University of Political Science and Law in 2004.

Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, referred to as "Shangzheng" for short, is a public full-time ordinary undergraduate college with independent legal personality approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and declared by the Ministry of Education. The Central Training University for the Reform of the Police Recruitment System for Political and Legal Cadres, the China Government Scholarship China International Student Receiving University, the Silk Road Government Scholarship International Student Training University, the member of the Overseas Preparatory Education Alliance for Studying in China, and the member of the Li Ge Alliance of the National University of Political Science and Law, are the governing units of the "Belt and Road" think tank cooperation alliance. It has been selected into the the Supreme People's Court Belt and Road Judicial Research Base, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization International Judicial Exchange and Training Cooperation Base, the National Defense Education Characteristic School of the Ministry of Education, the construction unit of Shanghai University Model Marxist College, and the "Key Training Colleges" of the Shanghai University Curriculum Ideological and Political Education Reform Examination.

The predecessor of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law is Shanghai School of Political Science and Law Management established by 1984, and then Shanghai Law School. 1992 was renamed Shanghai Law School with the approval of the Ministry of Education. 1In April, 1993, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Shanghai Law School and the Law Department of Shanghai University College of Literature merged to form Shanghai University Law School, and began to train undergraduate talents. 1998 began to train graduate-level talents. In September 2004, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law became an independent Shanghai-owned ordinary institution of higher learning.
