Article 12 of the Education Law stipulates that Chinese is the basic teaching language in schools and other educational institutions. Schools and other educational institutions with minority students as the mainstay may use the spoken and written languages commonly used by their own nationalities or local nationalities for teaching. Schools and other educational institutions should promote the use of putonghua and standardized characters commonly used throughout the country in teaching.
