Suqian College was established in 2002, located in Suqian City, Jiangsu Province. It is a full-time provincial public institution of higher learning organized by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province.
On May 20 14, Suqian College was formally established as a private college at the undergraduate level with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In March 2020, the Ministry of Education sent a letter agreeing that Suqian College should be transformed into a provincial public university. The merged Suqian College consists of headquarters (Suqian Vocational and Technical College), teachers' department (Suqian Normal School and Shuyang Normal School) and TV University (Suqian Radio and TV University). According to the needs of running a school, from 2003 to 2009, Shuyang Teachers College, Suqian Teachers College, Suqian Vocational and Technical College and Suqian Radio and TV University were independent from Suqian College.
Considering that Suqian's higher education has no foundation and its economic foundation is relatively weak, the provincial and municipal governments have adopted a special system and model of "co-construction by provinces and cities, co-construction by eight universities, cooperative education and public-run private operation", and organized eight provincial universities, including Nanjing Normal University, Suzhou University, Yangzhou University, Jiangsu University, Nanjing Institute of Technology, Xuzhou Normal University (now Jiangsu Normal University), Nanjing University of Finance and Economics and Nanjing Institute of Technology, to establish Suqian College in cooperation with Suqian City.
