The origin of compound surname
There was a custom in the Han Dynasty that it was named after only one name. In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there are only two words: Wu Anyuan and Huang.
China's compound surname is a wonderful flower in China's surname culture. We can learn a lot of historical knowledge from this compound surname.
There are several situations about the origin of compound surnames:
1) Some of them came from fiefs.
For example, the Linghu family described it like this in Hundred Family Names: In the Zhou Dynasty, there was a man named Wei Ke, who repeatedly made meritorious deeds and was sealed in Hu Ling. Later generations took "Hu Ling" as their surname;
Another example is the Duangan family. Li Zong, the grandson of Laozi, was sealed in Duangan, and later generations took Duangan as their surname.
In addition, there are Liang Qiu, Shangguan, Yang Tongge, and Li Zhong with compound surnames, all of which belong to this situation.
2) Some people come from their places of residence. For example, the doctor of Qi Huangong in the Zhou Dynasty lived in Dongguo, Linzi, the capital, and later generations took "Dongguo" as their surname;
Another example is the surname "Lu Qiu". There was a doctor in the State of Qi who gave birth to a baby and lived in Luqiu. He was called "Lu" and later generations took "Luqiu" as their surname.
There are also compound surnames such as Nanmen, Ximen, Nangong and Puyang, which are also obtained because of their place of residence.
3) Others come from official names, official symbols, rank and clan characters.
Such as Sima, Sikong, Sikou, Situ, Taishi, Jimo, Guan Qi, Wuma, Lezheng, Zuo Qiu and other compound surnames all come from official names;
Ram, Ziyang and other compound surnames come from the word Wang Fu;
Gongsun and Deng's compound surnames come from the system of peerage; Granduncle and other compound surnames come from families.
It's really interesting to ponder these compound surnames carefully.
For example, Sima Qian was jailed for the Liling case, and his two sons, Sima Lin and Sima Guan, were afraid of being implicated, so they changed their names and surnames and lived in seclusion in the countryside.
The two brothers each took the word Sima, and the eldest brother added two points to the left of the word Ma and changed his surname to Feng. The younger brother added a vertical to the left of the word "Si" and changed his surname to "Tong".
Another example is Ouyang, who has a compound surname. Some of them are simplified as Europe, while others are simplified as Yang. Simplifying to Zhong, Gong Sunsun, etc. may be a trend of monosyllabic compound surnames.
Hundred Surnames, a book written in the Song Dynasty, collected 442 single surnames and 6 1 compound surnames, with a total of 503 surnames. In Ming Dynasty, Chen Shiyuan collected 3,625 single surnames and compound surnames in surname engraving. From 65438 to 0978, the relevant departments investigated the use of surnames in China in seven major cities through the household registration and post and telecommunications departments, and obtained a total of 2,587 surnames. Including Beijing 2250, Shanghai 1640, Shenyang 1270, Wuhan 1574, Chongqing 1245, Chengdu 163 1, and Guangzhou1. From 65438 to 0984, the Collection of Surnames in China (edited by Yan Fuqing) published by People's Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House collected 5730 single surnames and compound surnames. However, Taiwan Province scholar Wang Sucun's House of Surnames in China has collected as many as 7,720 ancient and modern China surnames. But this is not the exact number. According to the Dictionary of Surnames in China (edited by Yuan Yida and Du Ruofu) published by Beijing Education Science Publishing House 1996, there are1969 surnames recorded in Chinese in ancient and modern China, including 5327 single-character surnames and 4329 double-character surnames,1665449. This is the latest statistics on the number of surnames in China so far.
The China surnames used by modern China people need further investigation and discovery, especially in the areas where traffic is blocked but the ancient pronunciation of Han and Tang dynasties is still maintained, and in ethnic minority areas, there are definitely many surnames buried among the people because of the writing barrier.
