Credit system in Italian higher education system
The credit system is based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Credits used in academic courses (Italian: CFU plastic university credits):

-Credits represent the total number of times students study (class hours, individual study, preparation for exams, exercises). One credit is equivalent to 25 hours of study.

-60 credits is equivalent to the average class hours of a student in a school year. (about 1500 hours)

-You need 180 credits to get a college diploma, and 120 credits to get a master's degree, reaching 300 credits.

It should be noted that credits cannot replace test scores or final papers. These show the effect of learning, and credits represent the total amount of learning that students have completed a particular study.

The credit system allows students to transfer from one level of study to another in the same or different universities. It also encourages international mobility of students.
