Brief introduction of generalist education
Famous scholars in ancient times are often generalists with both arts and sciences. They involve many majors and have a wide range of knowledge, which is often beyond the reach of modern people. The so-called generalist usually refers to a person with a wide range of knowledge and versatility, and is called a horizontal talent from the perspective of talent science and education. General education is to cultivate talents with noble sentiments, profound knowledge, advanced ideas, self-motivation and self-development. It is a liberal arts education that pays attention to the cultivation of rationality and emotion. General education attaches importance to the comprehensiveness and extensiveness of knowledge, but it is often too broad, which affects the in-depth development of the subject. Corresponding to generalist education is specialist education, which refers to the education of cultivating specialized talents. Professional education pays more attention to the cultivation of students' practical working ability, and the trained talents are irreplaceable in the short term. However, under the condition of too fine division of majors, one-sided emphasis on vocational education will cause students' narrow knowledge and affect their later development. Therefore, both generalist education and specialist education have their own limitations. General education refers to the non-professional education received by all college students, aiming at cultivating their extensive non-utilitarian basic knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary for them to actively participate in social life, have a sense of social responsibility and become all-round developed people. Corresponding to general education is professional education. Professional education often refers to specialized education, which makes the educated become professionals.
