Some time ago, I went to Hangzhou to attend the West Lake Forum on Private Education in China. I am an old friend of the West Lake Forum. Participated in four consecutive sessions, and each harvest was different. Looking back on my participation in various theme forums at different levels for so many years, I found two important findings, which were summarized and discussed by my friends.
The first discovery is that the exquisiteness of a forum is usually determined by the exquisiteness of the reports made by the heavyweight speakers attending the forum.
Many people attend a forum, usually for several important speakers. The more famous you are, the more you have to maintain your personal brand image in front of the public, so that participants feel that they are carefully prepared. For example, some industry leaders use ppt (presentation) when making reports, only piling up words, and rarely using pictures and charts. I don't know that visual expression is more acceptable to the audience; When telling stories, I was too casual and didn't pay attention to controlling time. When the host reminded me that the time was up, the important content was not finished. When you talk about a concept, you don't use easy-to-understand case stories to help explain it. In a forum, several invited heavyweight speakers will be forced to end in a hurry if they don't grasp the time well, which will leave a casual impression on the participants' minds and naturally bring brand loss to the forum organizers.
The second discovery is that 80% of the participants in a forum generally contribute to the gains of 20% of the speakers who attend the forum.
If you pay enough attention, you will find that the phenomenon of "28 rule" often appears around you. For example, 20% of people in society own 80% of social wealth, and 80% of the profits of enterprises are usually created by 20% of employees. I have participated in many forums, and every time I look back on my gains, I always find that about 80% of my gains are obtained from 20% of the speakers in the forums. For example, this private education West Lake Forum invited 10 speakers, and most of my gains (80%) were mainly inspired by the speeches of two speakers.
A friend wants to ask, how did you hear about dry goods from 20% of the keynote speakers' reports? I have the following three thoughts:
1. Find new knowledge you haven't heard before.
Any forum activity will convey a lot of information, and different people will have different information. Each of us has our own interest map, and only the information in the interest map will attract our attention. For example, at the West Lake Forum on Private Education, Fang Jianfeng, vice president of China Private Education Research Institute, and Wang Leyan, a partner of Capital Control Fund, mentioned the concept of VIE, which translated into Chinese is "variable interest entity", also called "agreement control". This "VIE" is a new concept to me. Why did it attract my attention? Recently, I am more interested in the investment and financing of education, so when they talk about "VIE structure", I will pay special attention to it and expand the reading of the concept until I understand it.
2. Dig exciting new details.
In public forums, many speakers, for various reasons, generally don't reveal some hidden rules or core secrets on the spot. But in order to show that he is talking about dry goods, he will still talk about some details of "water". At this time, only people based on common interests can grasp this fleeting knowledge point and understand the logic behind the details.
? For example, at the West Lake Forum for Private Education, Jia, Dean of New Oriental Okay Institute of Wisdom Education, shared the details of how to digitize knowledge points, which caught my attention. Jia talked about which knowledge points each question on Okay platform belongs to, what the stem is, what options are available, what the key points are, what the answers are, what the analysis is, and what the relevant knowledge points are. These tags need to be supported by a set of algorithms in order to push content suitable for students. This reminds me of what Khan Academy, an online education platform, did: integrating all knowledge points of a certain subject, building a knowledge structure network-knowledge map, and explaining which knowledge points are in front and which knowledge points are behind. Through a program, these problems are connected in series, and new exercises are automatically assigned to students. According to what problems students can't do, relevant knowledge points are pushed for them to improve "teaching" and "teaching"
3. Docking new actions and changing thinking
? We should think about the inspiration from the forum in an action way, sort it out, and find out which inspiration can be used in our work immediately and which can be used for reference in our future work. For example, at the West Lake Forum on Private Education, Professor Wu Hua, director of the Private Education Research Center of Zhejiang University, talked about four core concepts from the perspective of the implementation of the New Deal for Private Education: private education is superior to public education, private education is an integral part of public education, for-profit private schools are an integral part of private education, and students' rights are equal. In particular, his interpretation of these four core concepts will help private educators to understand the value of private education and the importance of educational equity in a deeper level. At the same time, it can also help us private educators to integrate these ideas about the development of private education when reporting to the leaders in charge of education in the future, which will subtly influence the decision-making of superior leaders and win their support.
? How to hear about dry goods from a forum? Please remember: you need to come to the scene with your interest map, and then follow the guidance of interest to capture new knowledge in line with your interest direction from other people's reports; If you are well informed and don't listen to new content, then dig out new details that are instructive to you from a familiar scene introduced by others and try to understand the logic behind the details; When you return to work, you should re-examine the enlightenment gained from the forum, make changes according to the logic of action, and start your behavior change with new cognition.
