The Early Development of Psychology in Beijing Normal University

Teachers College and Excellent Teachers Department of Shi Jing University (1902- 1908)

The predecessor of Beijing Normal University was Teachers College of Shi Jing University, which was founded in 1902 (the 28th year of Guangxu). Its establishment initiated the modern higher normal education in China, and also became the beginning of psychology education in China. According to the charter of King James School issued by 1902, psychology is a public subject for students (equivalent to a public compulsory course).

1903 wrote the Constitution of Primary Normal School, which stipulated that educational principles should be emphasized and the essence of psychology should be explained. According to the articles of association of normal schools with excellent grades, psychology is studied in all subjects in the first year and applied psychology in the second year, with 2 hours per week. At that time, the education system basically imitated the Japanese education system, and most of the textbooks or handouts used in schools were translated into Japan. At that time, Japanese teachers were also employed to teach psychology in normal universities, among which Hattori Unoji (1867- 1939) was the most famous. Unokichi from Hattori joined the Teachers College of Shi Jing University on 1902 as a "regular teacher". He is the first psychology teacher to teach psychology in normal college. There are two kinds of psychology lectures he teaches: the thread-bound version and the printed version. The publication time of the paper version is about 1902 ~ 1903. The book is divided into three parts: cognition, emotion and will of psychological activities, which is the latest content of western psychology at that time. This psychology handout is the earliest university psychology textbook in China and the earliest Japanese psychology book in China. This book is not only a compulsory psychology textbook for every normal student in Teachers College, but also a best-selling new book in China and Japan.

1906 (thirty-two years of Guangxu) In June, the Ministry of Education's "Guide to Selecting Courses for Excellent Teachers" set up a course to train primary school teachers and middle school teachers, and undergraduates studied psychology for two academic years.

Shi Jing Normal University and Beijing Normal University (1908- 1923)

1908, the excellent normal department of Shi Jing University was renamed as the excellent normal school of Shi Jing University, which was the beginning of the independent establishment of higher normal schools in China.

19 12, the Republic of China was founded, and Shi Jing Excellent Normal School was changed to Beijing Normal School.

19 12 promulgated the "Regulations of Normal Universities" which stipulates that pedagogy is a compulsory course. Since then, Beijing Normal University has stipulated that undergraduate compulsory subjects include psychology, pedagogy, educational history and teaching methods. This is the earliest clear stipulation about the systematic professional education of normal students.

19 18, the famous educator Lin went to Beijing normal university as a professor, teaching psychology and pedagogy.

1920, Zhang Yaoxiang (note: Zhang Yaoxiang (1893- 1964), psychologist, from Hankou, Hubei. Master of Psychology, Columbia University, USA, was one of the first scholars to introduce European and American psychology to China. He founded the first psychological society and the first psychological magazine in China. ) to Beijing Normal University as a professor and director of education research department (graduate school), teaching general psychology, experimental psychology, children's psychology and educational psychology. In September of the same year, Beijing Normal University established a psychology laboratory, which is one of the earliest psychology laboratories in China.

1922, the journal of Chinese Psychological Association, Psychology, is published, edited by Zhang Yaoxiang, and the editorial department is located in the psychological laboratory of Beijing Normal University. This is the first psychology magazine in China and the first psychology magazine in the East. At that time, Psychology magazine enjoyed a certain reputation at home and abroad. A total of 14 issues were published, with 163 papers and1.4000 words. Its content involves various fields of psychology: general psychology, experimental psychology, animal psychology, children's psychology, adolescent psychology, social psychology, abnormal psychology, psychohistory, applied psychology, educational psychology, intelligence test, educational test and so on. Due to unstable situation and financial difficulties, it closed at 1927.

1922 Professor Zhang Yaoxiang conducted a public opinion survey in Beijing, aiming at "exploring the true public opinion of the Chinese people". Beiping Normal University and Northwest United University (1923- 1952)

1939, the former national Beiping Normal University was renamed as the National Northwest Normal University and moved to Lanzhou from 1940. During this period, the public compulsory courses offered by the Ministry of Education include the course of educational psychology. At that time, the teaching conditions were relatively simple, with more than 40 kinds of psychological instruments.

1946, National Beiping Normal University resumed its school in Beiping.

1947, Ivy, a famous psychologist in China, gave a lecture at the invitation of Beijing Normal University.

1949, Beiping was liberated and renamed Beijing, and the school was renamed Beijing Normal University accordingly.

Before the national colleges and universities were adjusted from 65438 to 0952, the Department of Education of Beijing Normal University set up a psychology teaching and research group, headed by Peng Fei, director of the Department of Education. Development of Psychology Department of Fu Jen Catholic University

The Department of Psychology of Fu Jen Catholic University was founded in 1929, and the first dean was German professor Gerci. Goeltsch studied under Feng Te, the father of scientific psychology, and Lindewski, a German experimental psychologist. The Department of Psychology inherited the research ideas of German experimental psychology school and established a world-class laboratory.

At that time, Fu Jen Catholic University gathered many famous psychologists in China, such as Wang Zhengkui and Lin Chuanding. The psychology department attaches great importance to the cultivation of core basic abilities such as statistics, measurement and experiment. At the same time, it attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' language ability, lists English and German as compulsory courses, and requires students to read the original works of psychology. The Department of Psychology of Fu Jen Catholic University has trained a number of outstanding talents, and famous psychologists such as Jing Qicheng, Zhang Houcan and Chen Chonggeng have all graduated here.

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, some universities moved westward, and the psychology department of Fu Jen Catholic University became the only training base for psychology talents in Beijing, which made important contributions to the development of psychology in China.

The adjustment of departments in universities for nationalities and the development before the Cultural Revolution (1952- 1966)

During the period of 1952, the departments of Chinese universities were adjusted, and the Faculty of Science of China University, the Department of Education of yenching university, the Education Research Office of China Renmin University and Fu Jen Catholic University were merged into Beijing Normal University. The Department of Education of Renmin University of China, the Department of Psychology of Fu Jen Catholic University and the Department of Education of Beijing Normal University were merged, and Professor Peng Fei, a famous psychologist, served as the head of the Department of Education. The Department of Education has set up a psychology teaching and research section, with Professor Guo Yicen as the director. The main members are Guo Yicen, Wu, Zhu Zhixian, Yin Dexin and Xue Hongzhi from Beijing Normal University, Lin Chuanding and Xie Sijun from Fu Jen Catholic University, Li Pingxi, Sun Changling and Lu Yu from China Renmin University. There are about 20 psychology teachers, which lays a solid foundation for the vigorous development of psychology in Beijing Normal University in the future.

1985 founded the journal of psychological development and education, and 1994 was rated as the core journal of psychology and pedagogy among Chinese periodicals.

According to the overall development plan of Beijing Normal University and the future development trend of psychology, the goal of the School of Psychology is to build it into a comprehensive, domestic first-class and internationally renowned psychological talent training and scientific research base after about 10 years of efforts. In order to achieve this goal, during the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, we should basically complete the structural adjustment, including the discipline setting and the construction of course materials, establish a professional setting and curriculum system that meets the needs of social and economic development and conforms to the development trend of psychological science, and realize a new pattern of equal emphasis on basic research and applied research, and coordinated development of academic exploration and social services.
