Northeast Normal University was founded in 1946, formerly known as Northeastern University. It is the first comprehensive university in northeast China. 1950 according to the needs of national education development, it was renamed Northeast Normal University directly under the Ministry of Education. 1953, the school began to recruit and train graduate students. 1958 was placed under the management of Jilin Province and renamed as Jilin Normal University.

As of May 2023, the school has free campuses and Jingyue campuses, with 2 1 college, 82 undergraduate majors, 24 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 37 first-class disciplines authorized by master degrees, 2 1 doctoral degree authorization points, 22 post-doctoral research stations and 65 full-time teachers.
