Zhejiang University is a school that pays more attention to general education in China. In undergraduate education, the school has specially opened a course called general education (different from specialized courses and specialized courses). Undergraduate students are required to complete certain credits in several modules (according to the official statement, they are Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D and Class F) (different majors have different requirements. Basically, science and engineering students require more credits for general education in humanities and social sciences, while humanities and social sciences students, the course is not purely knowledge-based. What is more meaningful is that there is no threshold for students to enhance their understanding of this course.
Tsinghua University established the Department of History of Science, not to study the history of some specialized disciplines, nor just to promote science education, but to consider the history of science as an organic environment of comprehensive universities and a part of general education in universities. Therefore, the Department of Science History in Tsinghua is closely integrated with general education and undergraduate quality education in Tsinghua, actively connecting liberal arts with science and engineering, science with humanities, and building a bridge between the two cultures. For a person's life, general education does not waste time at all. Open a general course, yes. Can't be simple and rude. First of all, we must find a suitable way to start classes. For example, since schools must require liberal arts students to take enough science and technology courses, we must first find a suitable way to offer this type of courses. Secondly, shortage is better than abuse. Quality should be guaranteed in general education courses.
