The school was originally named East China University of Political Science and Law. 1In June, 952, the law departments, political departments and social departments of 9 universities including St. John's University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College and Aurora University were merged and established in the former site of St. John's University. 1958, the school was merged into Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; 1963 started construction again and enrolled students the following year.
