It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Zhejiang Provincial People's Government and Ningbo Municipal People's Government. It is also a university jointly established by the State Oceanic Administration and the Ningbo Municipal People's Government. It is the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China, the first batch of key construction universities in Zhejiang Province and key universities in Zhejiang Province. It has been selected into the national "11/plan", the outstanding agricultural and forestry talents education and training plan, the innovation experimental zone of the national college students' self-employment teaching model, the national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training plan, the first batch of demonstration universities in China to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, the scholarship receiving institution of China government for foreign students in China, the national college practical education and innovation and entrepreneurship base, the national new engineering research and practice project, and the demonstration of mass entrepreneurship in Zhejiang Province.

Ningbo University was founded on 1986 with a donation from Bao Yugang, and Deng Xiaoping wrote the name of the university. At the beginning of the school, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, China University of Science and Technology, Peking University and the former Hangzhou University built it. 1996, the former Ningbo University, Ningbo Normal University and Ningbo Branch of Zhejiang Fisheries College merged to form a new Ningbo University.
