Ma Sicong was an outstanding composer in China in the 20th century. He devoted his life to the integration of Chinese and western music arts, and demonstrated the aesthetic connotation and cultural heritage of the Chinese nation with exquisite western music skills. Ma Sicong is a pioneer of Chinese violin music. Because of his outstanding performance and creation, violin music from the west became a part of China music and spread widely in China. Ma Sicong is one of the pioneers of modern music education in China. He promoted the establishment of modern music education system in China, and trained a group of world-renowned talents in the music field for China. Ma Sicong is also an excellent music educator. Since 1932, he has served as the dean of the privately-run Guangzhou Conservatory of Music, and later worked in the Art Department of the School of Education of Nanjing Central University (1933), the College of Literature of Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen University (1937), the Music Department of Guangzhou Provincial Institute of Art (1946), and the Hong Kong Chinese Conservatory of Music (/kloc-).
Ma Sicong is knowledgeable and has summed up a set of scientific violin teaching methods in his long-term teaching practice. In teaching, Ma Sicong advocated the idea of "paying equal attention to technology", that is, technology is the means and art is the purpose. He not only pays attention to the basic training of students' playing skills, but also pays attention to the pursuit of music content and the expression of thoughts and feelings. He set an example by "never grandstanding for show", and also emphasized the importance of cultural literacy, teaching music as a culture. At the same time, he encourages students to create all opportunities and conditions, learn from others' strengths and absorb artistic nutrition extensively.
For decades, Ma Sicong has been like a spring breeze, moistening things silently. With its simple, generous, approachable and conscientious mind, it has trained outstanding violin talents such as Lin Yaoji, Sheng Zhongguo, Xiang Zepei and Liu Yuxi for China.
