The school's predecessor was the training course for technicians of the Central Broadcasting Bureau, which was founded in 1954. 1April, 959, with the approval of the State Council, the school was upgraded to Beijing Broadcasting Institute. In August, 2004, Beijing Broadcasting Institute was renamed China Communication University.

"Morality, Specialty, Profession and Competition First" was founded by China Communication University in the early 1990s. Its meaning is that "virtue" means adhering to the so-called virtue and cultivating students to establish good social merits and professional ethics.
"Dedication" means respecting the cause, loving the major, concentrating on your studies, and having a strong sense of professionalism and social responsibility. "erudition" means mastering extensive scientific and cultural knowledge, being knowledgeable and having a solid foundation.
