Adams was born in a tenant farmer's family in Lannister, Cornwall, England. Although Adams's father was poor, he wanted his son to learn culture and send him to Devon Port for formal school education. Adams was particularly interested in mathematics, studied hard and showed high mathematical ability. 1837 entered St. John's College, Cambridge University. 1843 graduated and stayed as a researcher.
