The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the oldest universities in Hong Kong. It can be traced back to the Hong Kong Government Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which was established in 1937. It is the first government-funded institution in Hong Kong to provide engineering education. 1947 changed its name to Hong Kong Polytechnic; The Hong Kong Polytechnic was established in1972; 1994, Hong Kong law "Hong Kong Polytechnic University Ordinance" came into effect, and the school was renamed as Hong Kong Polytechnic University. On March 5, 2020, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Foshan) project was included in the preparatory project plan for key construction in Guangdong Province.
The research of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University focuses on application; Establish research centers jointly with Microsoft, Boeing, Alibaba, Huawei, State Grid and other companies; Academic and teaching cooperation with Cambridge University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, China Academy of Sciences, China Renmin University and Xi Jiaotong University; Developing space instruments for European Space Agency, Russian Federal Space Agency, Chinese lunar exploration project and Mars exploration program.
In 2022-23, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked 65th in the QS World University in the UK, 100 in the American News World University, and 79th in the Times Higher Education World University in the UK.
