Wuhan University for Nationalities, referred to as South-Central University for Nationalities for short, is directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is a university directly under the central ministries and commissions jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Hubei Provincial People's Government and the Wuhan Municipal People's Government.

The school, formerly known as South-Central University for Nationalities, was founded in 195 1 and renamed South-Central University for Nationalities in March 2002. The school is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, a national regional central city in China and a sub-provincial city known as "thoroughfare of nine provinces" and "Oriental Chicago". Located in the hinterland of China Optical Valley, one of the most intellectually intensive areas in China, it is adjacent to Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and other universities.
