The compilation of Modern Hubei began with the Hubei Translation Bookstore founded by Zhang Zhidong in the 20th year of Guangxu (1894). In the 28th year of Guangxu (1902), Zhang Zhidong proposed to establish the Chu Jiang Compilation Bureau jointly established by the two rivers and lakes. The characteristics of books compiled by Hubei Translation Bureau and Chu Jiang Compilation Bureau are as follows: first, Japanese, European and American educational books, and practical books such as arithmetic, military equipment, commerce and agronomy are translated and published in Japanese; Second, the content focuses on teaching theoretical books and textbooks.
These educational books and practical books were spread to the teachers and students of new schools in Hubei and Hubei provinces through students studying in Japan and Japanese teachers, infiltrated into educational practice, and promoted the modernization of education in Hubei and Hunan provinces. Therefore, the rise of modern compilation institutions and undertakings, such as Hubei Translation Bureau and Chu Jiang Compilation Bureau, promoted the modernization of early education in Hubei.
