Founded in 1953, the college undertakes the mission of continuing education for cadres and teachers of basic education and adult higher normal education in Beijing. The college consists of Education Management and Psychology College (Education Cadre College), Ideological and Political Education and Moral Education College, Humanities and Foreign Language Education College, Mathematics and Science Education College, Physical Education and Art Education College, and Communication College.
Seven teaching and research institutions, including the Institute of Information Technology and Labor Education and the Institute of Preschool Education, cover all the education and teaching activities of basic education.
At the same time, the college also manages the Beijing Teacher Development Center, owns academic journals such as Teacher Development Research and Journal of Beijing Institute of Education, and is responsible for the daily management of Beijing education series, which has extensive academic and practical influence throughout the country.
