Shanxi Provincial Department of Education mainly manages the general higher education, postgraduate education, higher vocational education, adult higher education, industrial education organized by social forces, self-study examination for adult higher education and continuing education.

Handle the establishment, renaming, cancellation and adjustment of institutions of higher learning in accordance with relevant regulations, examine and approve professional settings, formulate basic teaching documents, and guide the educational reform and higher education evaluation of institutions of higher learning.

Responsible for the overall planning and coordinated management of all kinds of education at all levels, and formulate the setting standards of all kinds of schools at all levels in conjunction with relevant departments; Guide the education and teaching reform of schools at all levels, and be responsible for the statistics, analysis and release of basic education information.

Responsible for promoting the balanced development of compulsory education and promoting education equity, responsible for the macro guidance and coordination of compulsory education, and guiding the work of ordinary high school education, preschool education and special education.

Formulate the basic requirements and teaching documents of basic education, plan the construction of textbooks for primary and secondary schools in the province, organize the examination and approval of local textbooks, and fully implement quality education.

To guide the education supervision in the whole province, be responsible for organizing and guiding the supervision, inspection, evaluation and acceptance of secondary and below secondary education, and guide the monitoring of the development level and quality of basic education.

Guide the development and reform of employment-oriented vocational education, formulate the basic requirements and teaching guidance documents of secondary vocational education, and review the establishment, renaming, cancellation and adjustment of secondary specialized schools. Guide the construction of teaching materials and vocational guidance for secondary vocational education.
