It, Hubei Hadron School, Hubei Academy and Shanghai Nanyang College were called the four major academies in China at that time.
A hundred years of elegance, after vicissitudes, the school has moved its site and changed its name several times. However, the purpose of running a school comes down in one continuous line, and it is called "a living witness of the modern educational history of China". Zhang Zhidong named it "Guangya", which means "the broad is great, and the elegant is right", emphasizing that the cultivated people should be "knowledgeable", that is, the harmony between "morality" and "talent".
