Boxer indemnity, also known as boxer indemnity, was an indemnity paid by the Qing government to Britain, France and Russia affected by the Boxer Rebellion after Eight-Nation Alliance's defeat in190/kloc-0. The compensation involved more than a dozen countries, with a total amount of 450 million taels of silver, and the total principal and interest was nearly 654.38 billion taels. However, for this huge compensation, most countries have reduced or exempted it, either giving up or returning part of the compensation. For example, in the United States, the United States paid a total of 24 million yuan, and returned more than 654.38+025 million, nearly half of the compensation amount. The money returned will be used for cultural and educational undertakings in China. Britain, France, Italy and even Belgium returned China, while Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia's successor, the Soviet Union, gave up reparations. Among the great powers, only Japan was penniless and did not return China a penny. So why didn't Japan ask for anything in return until the end?
Japan is a rising star among big countries and a relatively poor country among big countries. With a large population, few resources and a weak national foundation, it is naturally unwilling to take out the money for personal enrichment. Unlike the United States, Japan has deep pockets, so if you say no, you don't want it. Boxer indemnity, China and Japan paid compensation of 34.79 million yuan, with interest exceeding 50 million yuan. At that time, Japan was at the peak of its development. It has to buy ships, build factories and engage in education. Japan has no money and is naturally unwilling to give up these reparations. Three years later, Japan and Russia fought a Russo-Japanese war. The money was borrowed from the financial market in London, England, at that time, it was still in World War I. This small Japanese workshop, which had just started a business, not only had no extra money for China, but also lacked money than China, so it was naturally penniless.
Of course, although Japan is poor and stingy, it is still very anxious to see that all countries have returned their money to China, especially the overseas students have gone to the United States, Britain and other European and American countries. 1918-1921year, a number of Japanese parliamentarians proposed a refund to the National Assembly, which reflected the education problems of students studying in Japan. Realizing the seriousness of the problem, the Japanese government pretended to follow the example of Britain and the United States in refunding fees to China to support education in China. However, there is much thunder and little rain in Japan, and no China cultural groups receive subsidies from Japan. In addition, with ulterior motives, Japan tried to carry out cultural aggression against China in the name of Sino-Japanese cultural research institutions. The Japanese government and overseas students saw Japan's ambition and strong anti-Japanese tendency, so China reacted negatively to Japan's refund behavior, and overseas students directly rejected the subsidies provided by Japan, so Japan's refund plan went bankrupt. Since Japan did not refund or reduce the amount of compensation, China paid boxer indemnity to Japan until the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. China paid a total of 57.36 million taels of silver to Japan, almost all of which was paid off. This shows that Japan is the most selfish and stingy of all the great powers.
