The tall lintel of the West Gate of Tsinghua is engraved with the four free and easy characters "Tsinghua University" inscribed by the founding leader Mao Zedong. 1June, 950, busy Chairman Mao wrote six "Tsinghua University" at the request of teachers and students in Tsinghua. As a master of calligraphy, he also modestly pointed out that "the right side of cursive script seems better". Since then, the school emblem inscribed by Chairman Mao has been accompanied by every teacher and student in Tsinghua.
