Zhenyuan county belongs to Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, 96 kilometers away from Kaili City, the capital of Guizhou Province. It is located in Wuling Mountain area in the east of Guizhou Province, and it is the slope zone of the transition from Guizhou Plateau to Xiangxi Hill. It borders Xinhuang, Hunan in the east, Sansui and Jianhe in the south, Shibing in the west and Cengong and Shiqian in tongren city in the north. It is the east gate of Guizhou Province, and is known as "the key to Yunnan and Chu, the gateway to eastern Guizhou". It belongs to subtropical humid climate zone, with annual average temperature 16.6℃, frost-free period of 292 days, annual precipitation 1057mm and annual sunshine hours 1200m.

The natural vegetation in zhenyuan county belongs to subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest belt, which is mainly distributed in virgin evergreen oak forest, evergreen deciduous mixed forest and Pinus massoniana forest area in eastern Guizhou. The main types are coniferous forest and evergreen broad-leaved mixed forest, mainly Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata.
