Its predecessor, East China Academy of Art, was formed by the merger of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (founded in 19 12), Suzhou Academy of Fine Arts (founded in 1922) and Shandong University Art and Music Department 1952. 1958 moved to Nanjing, and 1959 was renamed Nanjing Art Institute.

Nanjing Art College is located at No.5, Huju North Road 15, north of Caochangmen in the northwest of Nanjing, adjacent to Gulin Park and Jiangsu TV Tower.
