In order to meet the needs of the establishment of the socialist market economic system and social development, our department takes the adjustment of professional structure as the breakthrough point, takes the reform of teaching plan as the core, actively carries out professional adjustment and transformation, broadens the scope of majors, enhances adaptability, strives to create interdisciplinary and emerging disciplines, expands to the discipline of resources and environment, comprehensively promotes the reform of school-running system, and opens up a new situation in which "scale, structure, quality and benefit" are coordinated and unified.
First, the professional setting
The Department of Earth Science and Engineering of Taiyuan University of Technology is affiliated to the School of Mining Engineering. Its predecessor is the Department of Geology of Shanxi Institute of Mining and Technology, which belongs to the former Ministry of Coal. Founded in 1958, it originally set up two undergraduate majors: coalfield geology and mineral exploration. From 65438 to 0998, it was adjusted to the major of "Resource Exploration Engineering", and in 2000, the undergraduate major of "Resource Environment and Urban and Rural Planning Management" was added.
On the basis of obtaining the master's degree in mineral exploration in 1990, the master's degree in earth exploration and information technology and the master's degree in geological engineering were awarded in 2000. It is the only unit in Shanxi province with bachelor's and master's degree qualifications in geoscience.
Second, the status quo of the construction of teachers
There are 28 full-time teachers in the whole department. See table 1 for their professional titles, educational background and age structure.
Table 1 List of Teachers in Earth Science and Engineering Department
In order to improve the teaching quality and teachers' level, we should increase financial and policy support for young and middle-aged academic backbones, encourage teachers to participate in major academic exchanges at home and abroad, stabilize the teaching staff, and attract outstanding talents to enrich teachers and scientific research posts. Through the introduction, training and irregular sending of teachers for further training, the level of running schools has been significantly improved. Since 1998, 2 professors have been promoted, 5 associate professors, 2 doctors are studying, and 0 masters have been introduced. Professors and associate professors 12, accounting for 42.3% of the total number of teachers; There are 20 doctors (including doctoral students) and masters, and 5 international students, accounting for 89.3% of the total number of teachers. Hire 1 foreign professor, Professor R.Lovliee (University of Bergen, Norway).
Third, personnel training.
Since 1996, the major of "Resource Exploration Engineering" in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering has enrolled 2 classes every year. After adding the major of "Resources, Environment and Urban-Rural Planning and Management" in 2000, three new classes are enrolled every year. At present, there are 254 undergraduates. Twenty-three graduate students have graduated, four of them have obtained doctoral degrees, and the examination rate is 17.4%. At the end of 2002, there were 23 graduate students and 2 engineering graduate students1person.
With the timely adjustment of teaching plan and training talents for the market, the employment situation of graduates has been greatly improved. Since 1998, except some students have entered the departments of geological science education, scientific research and production, others have entered different fields of work, such as transportation, electric power, water conservancy, architecture and building materials, or engaged in production, scientific research, development and management, or engaged in the research and development of computers and information technology, or participated in the management of state affairs as civil servants, and even entered the departments of economy, insurance and news.
Fourth, the advantages and characteristics of running a school
1. Advantages and characteristics of running a school
Shanxi is a resource-rich province, and in the long-term development process, the environmental damage is particularly serious. Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan, as the only unit with bachelor's degree and master's degree qualifications in Shanxi Province, the Department of Earth Science and Engineering has developed around the theme of "Resources and Environment", adhered to the combination of basic theoretical research and applied research, with the main goal of cultivating talents in resource development and environmental protection and the main task of solving problems related to national economic construction, and formed its own characteristics.
2. The main measures and effects of education and teaching reform
(1) Adjust the main direction
2 1 century, the world is facing severe challenges in many aspects, such as population explosion, resource destruction, environmental pollution and frequent geological disasters. Population, resources, environment, disasters and other issues are mostly comprehensive geoscience research topics, which require the mutual penetration, intersection and comprehensive research between different disciplines in a large span and in many directions. It requires that the training of geological undergraduate talents should be changed from the narrow "shaping education" in the past to the "solid foundation and broad professional direction" led by the adjustment of professional structure. In 1998, our department changed the original "mineral investigation and exploration" and "professional direction". In 2000, the undergraduate major of "Resources, Environment and Urban and Rural Planning and Management" was added, and suggestions were actively made for urban geology, environmental geology, urban construction and management, water and other majors.
(2) Revise the teaching plan
Facing the talent training goal of 2 1 century, we should revise the teaching plan, reform the teaching content and curriculum system, and scientifically allocate the planned hours. It is divided into five parts: basic module (including school-level sub-module and college-level sub-module), professional technology basic module, professional module, free course selection module and practical teaching module. Of the total 2500 class hours, basic courses account for 49.4%, specialized basic courses account for 14.2%, specialized courses account for 20.6%, and elective courses account for 15.8%. Adjusting advanced mathematics to mathematical modeling, increasing the cultivation and training of mathematical application ability, ensuring four years of uninterrupted English teaching, strengthening geoscience foundation, adding courses such as "3S" and computer language, and adding computer curriculum design in grade three, which embodies the knowledge structure of thick foundation, wide caliber, emphasis on skills and strong foreign language.
(3) Building "Earth Science Museum"
The Earth Science Museum covers an area of 450 m2, including 1 14 exhibition boards, 1000 geological specimens, 12 modern biological specimens, 22 small models, 3 large models and physical exhibition stands. The exhibition hall consists of six parts: the formation and evolution of the earth, the origin and evolution of organisms, the mystery of minerals, magical and changeable rocks, resources and utilization, and environmental protection. Each part is independent. Based on the educational characteristics, clients and audience mentality of the Earth Science Museum, the physical objects are the foundation, with words, pictures, tables and models as the content, and with the help of sound, light and electricity, the physical exhibits are highlighted. The value of the exhibits is based on the connection between the exhibits and the audience. Exotic exhibits satisfy the curiosity of the audience, which are closely related to the social background, work and life of the audience. With the help of audio-visual education, computers and other equipment, the function of modern education is fully reflected. Through comfortable exhibition hall design, elegant showcase style, rich combination of objects and auxiliary exhibits, unique display forms, novel display methods and harmonious lighting and color arrangement, a good learning environment has been created, and it has become a modern popular science education base in our school and even in our province in the new century. Since its opening in May 2002, the museum has attracted more than 5,000 visitors from all walks of life, including teachers, primary and secondary school students, alumni, domestic and foreign visiting guests and scholars.
