The Essence of Thinking is the masterpiece of john dewey, a famous American educator. Hu Shi praised Dewey's pragmatic philosophy all his life, and Tao Xingzhi was deeply influenced by Dewey's views that education is life and school is society. Dewey believes that education must aim at reflective thinking. Dewey used a large number of cases in daily life in the book, and elaborated the different processes of our thinking in detail.
The Nature of Thinking consists of three chapters. The first chapter is about thinking training, which mainly explains what thinking is, the necessity of reflective thinking, inherent knowledge and thinking training, and situation and thinking training in schools.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, USA, he is one of the famous philosophers and educators in the 20th century. American pragmatism is the representative and founder of pragmatic educational thought.
