As a stylistic form, couplets are tools and carriers to express a certain theme. Its requirements of "linking form and meaning" are mainly reflected in the following two aspects, namely:
First of all, in form, the upper and lower links should be effectively "opposed".
Duality is a rhetorical device, which refers to the use of symmetrical words to enhance the language effect. This kind of antithesis includes the consistency and hierarchical opposition of corresponding words. For example, "write a thousand words and digress from Wan Li"; "Qian Fan is on the side of the sunken ship, and Wan Muchun is in front of the sick tree" (Tang Yuxi's poem) and so on.
Secondly, semantically, the upper and lower links should be organically linked.
Semantically, the contents expressed by the upper and lower couplets include scenery, images, thoughts, emotions, artistic conception and so on. , must be interrelated, must revolve around the same theme (the same context) and serve the same theme. Otherwise, it is just a primitive and ordinary couplet, not a couplet in the sense of style. Even in Revelation of Melody, "Cloud is to rain, snow is to wind, and night is to clear sky". Lai Hong to Yan, lodging birds to singing insects, etc. are all just the use of rhetorical materials, not couplets, but antithetical sentences.
The combination of form and meaning is one of the six basic rules (requirements) of couplets, the highest and most difficult requirement in couplet writing, and the fundamental difference between couplets and dialogues. If the upper and lower couplets each write an irrelevant thing, and the upper and lower couplets can't echo, take care of, contact and relate, they can't be regarded as couplets, but at most as antithesis. Sentences in antithesis can be irrelevant in meaning (of course, it is best to be relevant), couplets are not, and couplets must be relevant. This is the fundamental reason why couplets are called couplets.
Example 1: Kangxi inscribed the couplets of Gan Qing Palace in Beijing Forbidden City:
The table is the people, practice and think, and be cautious forever;
Five codes are difficult to apply, but civil ones are difficult.
Correct the form: that is, correct it by setting an example. Wanbang: that is, all vassal States, and later extended to the world and the whole country. Be cautious, cultivate one's mind, and cultivate one's mind forever: it means to be cautious, cultivate one's morality, and seek a long-term solution. There are two things written in this dialogue, but these two things are isolated from each other, have no connection and have no complete meaning expression. Although it conforms to the rules of "formal pair", it does not meet the requirements of "meaning association" Therefore, it is not a couplet in the true sense, but an antithesis.
Counterexample 2: 2065438+July 2007, a WeChat group conversation:

Compared with other sentences, the above sentences are neat in word structure, attributive and level tone, which is of good significance to the sentence itself. They not only meet the basic requirements of "word equivalence, structural correspondence, rhythm opposition and level tone opposition", but also are not consistent with the artistic conception of the sentence. Imagine, in the environment of "much thunder and little rain", how can there be a melodious and elegant scene of "Crane Feng Xiao Dance"? I'm afraid in this environment, the crane has long been hiding or wailing, and Feng has no interest in "dancing". In this sense, duality and sentence output are not unified in artistic conception, and even seriously destroy the context of sentence output. Therefore, those who do not meet the requirements of "Italian couplet" can not be regarded as couplets in the true sense, but as antithesis.
As far as couplets are concerned, the basic requirements (rules) are only primary and simplified expressions. As long as beginners follow the above six basic requirements (rules), that is, word equivalence, part-of-speech counterpoint, structural correspondence, rhythm opposition and association of form and meaning, they can create well-behaved couplets. In other words, in any case, couplets that follow the above six basic requirements (rules) are definitely qualified works, and may even be excellent works. However, it should be noted that in some cases (there are many such cases), couplets that do not follow the above six basic laws are not necessarily "out of line" works or good couplets. On the contrary, it may even be a masterpiece. This involves traditional rhetorical antithesis, special antithesis, loose rules of part of speech and the leveling of special words in couplet writing.
