Can brain cells regenerate?
cannot

The number of newborn neurons in the hippocampus of human brain drops sharply after birth, which is very rare in childhood, and there is no sign of neuron regeneration in adult brain.

The results showed that in the fetal period of 14 weeks, newborn neurons at different developmental stages flooded into the hippocampus from the "dormant area" of the embryo, and this trend slowed down obviously at 22 weeks. One year after birth, the number of immature neurons has been greatly reduced, and has maintained a downward trend. In all samples, the maximum age of immature neurons is 13 years old.

The researchers also conducted a similar study on macaques and found the same trend. They suggest that the reason why the new findings are quite different from the previous research results may be that the detection methods used before are not accurate enough. At present, there is no complete method to confirm the number of newborn neurons, and brain tissue samples can not fully reflect the living brain, so new findings need further study and confirmation.
