What we call "exam-oriented education" is not a summary of previous and present basic education, but a summary of many disadvantages caused by simply pursuing further studies. The so-called "exam-oriented education" refers to an objective tendency in China's educational practice that deviates from the actual needs of educated groups and social development, pursues high scores simply to cope with exams, and unilaterally pursues the enrollment rate.

At present, "exam-oriented education" has developed to a fairly complete level, and some characteristics can be summarized:

First, the difficulty and depth of the course have become the highest in all countries. The one-sided pursuit of the enrollment rate has greatly intensified the fierce competition that should not exist in the basic education stage. In order to improve the difficulty of examination and deepen the difficulty of subject knowledge, the textbooks in primary and secondary schools in China are more difficult, one or two grades higher than those in developed countries. This practice has been divorced from the actual cognitive ability of most teenagers and increased the learning pressure of students. According to a survey conducted by People's Education Publishing House in the early 1990s, about 80% of middle school students have difficulties in learning science textbooks, 30% of middle school students are tired of learning, and some areas are as high as 60%. In recent years, the new curriculum reform has begun to reduce the difficulty of subject knowledge, but the pace is not big enough. The difficulty and depth of primary and secondary school textbooks in China are still outstanding problems to be solved urgently.

The second is mechanical training and sea tactics. Examination-oriented education is characterized by the reduction of examination subjects, which will not significantly reduce the pressure and intensity of the examination. As long as you look at the piles of "materials" on the desktop, under the desk, under the seat and at the bedside of the dormitory in the classroom, you can feel the pressure of the exam.

Third, the key school system and school choice fever. The establishment of key school system in primary and secondary schools once had its historical rationality; Today, nine-year compulsory education has been basically popularized, and it has no positive effect. This system artificially creates the gap between schools, exacerbates the imbalance in the allocation of educational resources, and promotes the growing fever of choosing schools. Now the competition for choosing schools has moved to primary schools and even kindergartens. In order to improve the enrollment rate of our school, some famous schools and transitional schools illegally conduct examinations or assessments in junior high school, which disturbs and worsens the atmosphere of basic education. Various academic competitions, various cram schools and various textual research examinations are all derivatives of exam-oriented education.
