Dialect has cultural characteristics and is of great significance to the value of movies. In film dubbing, dialect dubbing plays an important role in conveying film culture.

Taking the film In the Mood for Love as an example, based on the defamiliarization theory, this paper analyzes the cultural loss caused by the English dubbing of Shanghai dialect in the film, and puts forward different cultural compensation translation strategies according to the specific context, in order to maximize its cultural characteristics. In 2000, the People's Republic of China (PRC) National Common Language Law established the legal status of Putonghua and standardized Chinese characters as the national common language. Since then, the popularity of Putonghua has increased year by year.

Before the popularization of Putonghua, many people spoke dialects. Due to the differences of regional dialects, people often feel annoyed when they go out because they don't understand dialects, which causes communication obstacles. The popularization of Putonghua has solved the problem of people's communication well. With the popularization of Putonghua, the usage rate of dialects has dropped a lot. In family education, more and more parents begin to pay attention to their children's learning of Mandarin and English, and prevent them from learning dialects.

Walking on the road in recent years, I have heard fewer dialects. When watching movies and TV series, I am often surprised by the sudden appearance of dialects in the film. A while ago, the hit TV series "My True Friend" was played by Tian Xiwei. The Chongqing dialect spoken in several clips really surprised the audience and excitedly discussed whether Xi Shan was dubbing or the original sound.
